NDIS Specialist Disability Accommodation
NDIS Specialist Disability Accommodation

For people with disabilities, having a home that meets their specific needs means more independence and a better quality of life. It is more than just a physical space; it’s about feeling comfortable, safe, and in control of your own environment. These homes help reduce the need for constant assistance, allowing people to do more on their own and build confidence in their abilities. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is a special type of housing designed for people with very high support needs or severe functional impairments. Think of it as a home that’s comfortable and tailored to make daily tasks easier and more accessible. SDA homes feature wide doorways, ramps, and other modifications to ensure you can move around easily and safely.

SDA Design Standards

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) homes are designed with specific standards to ensure that they meet the diverse needs of people with disabilities. There are four key design categories, each tailored to address different requirements.

  • Improved Liveability: For people with sensory, intellectual, or cognitive impairments. For instance, homes in this category might have minimal stairs to make them more accessible or an open design allowing support workers to keep an eye on residents without being intrusive.
  • Robust Construction: Built to be resilient and safe for those with complex behaviours. This type of housing is constructed to be incredibly strong and durable minimising the need for frequent repairs.
  • Fully Accessible: Here, every aspect of the home is designed to ensure you can move around freely and perform daily tasks with ease. These homes are built for people with significant physical impairments.
  • High Physical Support: These homes have features and fittings for those with very high support needs.
